ATM frames consist of fixed-length 53-byte cells that include a 5-byte header. As you will see later, this is much smaller than the largest Ethernet packets and is the result of a desire for a protocol that can support latency-sensitive applications such as voice traffic. ATM virtual circuits are identified by a Virtual Path Identification (VPI) and Virtual Channel Identification (VCI) pair. Quality of service (QoS) features are built into the ATM protocol, and five service classes are defined, as would be expected of a protocol designed from the ground up to support a large variety of applications.
