Adding X-headers to message headers is usually a good thing because it allows administrators and users to trace the path of messages and see what actions occurred as the message made its way from server to server. However, you might not want to expose information about your messaging infrastructure such as the name of email servers to the outside world, as this information might be of use to hackers. It s also possible that a spammer

could attempt to get messages past your defenses by inserting headers that seem to testify to their authenticity. Exchange therefore supports header firewall functionality to strip X-header information from messages as they pass through a connector. The header firewall implemented in Exchange 2010 uses Active Directory permissions to know whether header information should be removed or left intact. First, let s review the Active Directory permissions that exist on a send connector. We can retrieve the permissions with a command like this one:
