The photoinduced anisotropy is caused by the disparity of the repeated trans cis isomerization of azo chromophores under linear polarized light irradiation. The most ef cient excitation occurs in the polarization direction, which can force the chromophores to continually change their orientation and to be eventually stabilized at the direction perpendicular to the polarization (Natansohn and Rochon, 2002). The effect shows potential applications in areas such as reversible optical data storage, optical switching and sensors. The colloids composed of azo polymers can be a new type of the colloid-based material that exhibits the photoinduced birefringence and dichroism (Li et al., 2005a). Figure 5.20 shows the chemical structure of an azo polymer (PNANT) that has been prepared for the purpose. PNANT contains both pseudostilbenetype azo chromophores and ionizable carboxyl groups in the side chain in a random sequence. PNANT was synthesized from a PAC sample with the average degree of polymerization (DP) of 239 and a polydispersity index of 1.53. The precursor polymer containing anilino moieties was synthesized by the reaction between a proper amount of N-ethyl-N-(2-hydroxyethyl)aniline and PAC through the Schotten Baumann reaction. Unreacted acyl chloride groups were then hydrolyzed to obtain the COOH groups after the reaction. Finally, PNANT was obtained by azo coupling reaction between the precursor polymer and diazonium salt of 4-nitroaniline. In this reaction, the molar ratio of the diazonium salt to the anilino moieties of the precursor polymer was 1.1 in order that the anilino moieties were completely reacted. The details of these reactions can be seen in Li et al. (2005a), Wu et al. (2001), and Wang et al. (1997b).
