The differentiation between the irradiation effects of the polarized laser single beam and the interfering p-polarized laser beams can be observed by using 2-D arrays of the colloidal spheres as the testing samples. The samples were prepared by the vertical deposition method, which is discussed in Section 5.5. By this method, the hexagonally close-packed structure of the colloid spheres can be obtained. Different deformation behavior can be observed after irradiating the colloidal array with the polarized laser single beam for 15 min or the p-polarized interfering laser beams for 20 min. For the former, the colloidal spheres are uniformly stretched along the polarization direction of the laser beam. As the restraint of the neighboring colloids, the deformation degree of the colloids in the array is less than that of the isolated colloids. Changing the relative direction of the polarization to the array assembly direction shows no in uence on the stretching effect. On the contrary, after being irradiated with the interfering laser beams, only the colloids in bright regions of the interference fringes are changed, whereas those in the dark regions are almost unaffected. The exact mechanism of the deformation induced by the laser single beam is still not clear. In the experiment, the light intensity of the spatially ltered and collimated laser beam (1.5 cm in diameter) should be uniform in submicrometer size. This phenomenon has been further con rmed in another type of colloid composed of well-de ned polymeric chains (Lambeth and Moore, 2007). Such observations cannot be directly explained by using the gradient force of the laser irradiation. The new band appearing at 387 nm could be the absorption band because of the HEAZ/ACAZ charge-transfer complex. Upon the light irradiation, the absorption at 365 and 387 nm decreases gradually as the result of the trans-to-cis isomerization of the HEAZ chromophores. No variation is observed for absorption band at 455 nm because trans cis isomerization of the ACAZ moieties (a pseudostilbene-type chromophore) is too fast to be detected at the timescale given here (Rau, 1990). The relative absorbance can be given as At/ Aorigin, where Aorigin and At are the absorbance at 365 nm before the light irradiation and after the irradiation for different time periods. At/Aorigin can be used to indicate the relative amount of the trans isomers remaining at t time, and its variation represents the kinetics of the photoisomerization.
