ost people have a favorite color. Call me sick, but I have a favorite data structure. Actually, to be more precise, I have a favorite collection of three tightly connected data structures that make up the very core of ring 3 Windows 95. The structures I'm referring to are the module, the process, and the thread. When these structures are taken as a whole, it's hard to find any significant Windows API function that doesn't come into contact with them. Don't believe me Take the ShowScrollBar function. The first parameter is the HWND of the window with the scrollbar. Every HWND is associated with a specific message queue. And, as you'll see later, in Windows 95, every message queue is associated with a thread. Thus, at some point during the ShowScrollBar code, the information in a thread data structure will be needed. In this chapter, we'll be going over the core data structures of modules, threads, and processes. As we look at these structures, we'll often encounter auxiliary data structures that bear further investigation. For example, each process contains a pointer to a handle table (much like the handle table in a DOS Program Segment Prefix [PSP]). While looking at handle tables, we'll come across the all-important KERNEL 32 object. Likewise, when looking at threads, it's hard to ignore the presence of the Thread Information Block (TIB). The TIB turns out to play a vital part in structured exception handling.

I have found that the best way to write for this type of protocol is by writing a response handler in the Receive event or within the event or subroutine that receives incoming data. You must use LineMode with dsSocket. If you are using another tool, make sure it fires a Receive event for each line of text it receives. 2 covers programming with dsSocket, and you should refer to it if you have any questions specific to dsSocket as you read the rest of this chapter. Fortunately, I have already done the dirty work of writing an NNTP class in Visual Basic (cfNNTP.cls) that you can drop right into your application, or simply reference as a DLL. I have put comments in the code for each of the responses so you can step through the handler code for each response and modify it if need be. See 9 for more information on using cfNNTP object. NNTP commands can be sent anywhere from within your program, such as from a command button, menu option, or list box double-click. Unlike some of the other code in this book, it is not necessary to wait for a response in a loop after sending a command. The client code is state-oriented, meaning a command is sent and a state is entered, the state of waiting for a response. Once the response has been received, the state changes back to idle. The response handling code operates on the response codes differently depending on the state when the code was received. This will become more obvious when we start looking at the code.
