Through data binding, UI elements (called targets) are bound to data from a data source (called the source), as illustrated in Figure 5-1. When the data sources change, the UI elements bound to those data sources update automatically to reflect the changes. The data can come from different types of sources, and the target can be just about any UI element, including standard Silverlight controls.

Note that not all of the methods will be called for all bean factory types because they are not always appropriate. For example, the setServletContext method in the ServletContextAware bean will be called only if the bean factory is a WebApplicationContext implementation or otherwise hosted within a servlet. Additional methods are called during the life cycle of a bean factory that is being discarded for example, during the removal of a Spring-based web application. Table 3-4 enumerates these methods.

What the left outer join does is retrieve all the rows from the left table, even those with a Null value in the join field. So, we see that as well as all the rows from the inner join (Figure 3-12), we also have a row from the Member table for Barbara who had a Null for the join field MemberType. The fields in that row that would have come from the table on the right (Type and Fee) have Null values. Listing 3-18 shows the SQL for the outer join depicted in Figure 3-14. It is the same as for the ordinary join, but the key phrase INNER JOIN is replaced with LEFT OUTER JOIN.

Data binding simplifies application development. Since changes are reflected automatically, you do not need to manually update the UI elements. Also, by using data binding, you are able to separate the UI from the data in your application, which allows for a cleaner UI and easier maintenance.

Data binding in Silverlight is accomplished by using the Binding class. The Binding class has two components the source and target and a property that defines the way the two are bound, called the binding mode. The source is the data that is to be bound, the target is a property of the control that the data is to be bound to, and the mode defines how the data is passed between the source and the target (one-way, one-time, or two-way). You ll see how this works in the upcoming exercise. To define the binding of a control s property, you use XAML markup extensions, such as {Binding <path>}. For example, to bind the Text property of a TextBox to a data source s FirstName element, you would use the following XAML: <TextBox Text="{Binding FirstName }" />

Despite the benefits that implementing these interfaces can offer to your application, you do need to bear in mind that adding them creates a hard dependency on the Spring API, possibly forcing you to use Spring or imitate the Spring bean life cycle in otherwise unrelated contexts.

You might quite reasonably say that we wouldn t have needed an outer join if all the members had a value for the MemberType field (as they probably should). That may be true for this case but remember my cautions in 2 about assuming that fields that should have data will have data. In many situations, the data in the join field may be quite legitimately empty. We will see in later chapters queries like List all members and the names of their coaches if they have one. Losing rows because you have used an inner join when you should have used an outer join is a very common problem and sometimes quite hard to spot. What about right and full outer joins Left and right outer joins are the same and just depend on which order you put the tables in the join statement. Listing 3-19 will return the same information as Listing 3-18, although the columns may be presented in a different order.
