A data source view (DSV), first introduced in 21, is a central component of the UDM. At minimum, it provides an abstracted layer of the source data structures so you can work on your Analysis Services project without maintaining a connection to the source as previously mentioned. Typically, however, you enhance the DSV to provide user-friendly names, enforce business rules, and create relationships between tables for referential integrity. Some people consider it a best practice to perform these enhancements back in the source database, but the DSV gives you the flexibility to make changes when you don t have the appropriate permissions in the database. To create and modify a DSV, follow these steps: 1. To follow this example, you must complete the steps described in the previous sections of this chapter. Synchronized methods There are times that access to an entire method should be synchronized. One way to accomplish this is to wrap the entire method body in a synchronized block, using this as the object to synchronize on. While this may function as desired it doesn t necessarily convey the programmer s intent.
