Based on FineReader Server, ABBYY OCR solution for SharePoint properly digitizes documents in various formats, including image-based documents, to make their content easily accessible. Faster information retrieval helps the staff perform their tasks and boosts productivity.

by searching based on keywords, or perhaps by following links from another page Once the user finds content that they consider useful, they can submit a form to recommend keywords that are relevant to this item This is called tagging The folksonomy application stores a list of all the items you tag in an online list of bookmarks, so you can easily find your items of interest based on the keywords you think are important If the user chooses to make these bookmarks public, they are usually listed on publicly accessible pages for all to see Sometimes these tags are words used inside the document, and therefore they act as user-verified keywords that are relevant to the document For example, a document about recent sales wins might be tagged with the words sales, revenue, or even the names of new clients Other times, the folksonomy tags are never used in the document itself, but instead reflect what the audience feels about the item In this case, your recent sales wins might be tagged with terms like surprising, important, or financial Some may say that using both the tags financial and revenue would be redundant; thus your administrators should pick one and train all taggers to use it exclusively However, this would be missing the point of a folksonomy: people search for information in different ways One group might search with the term financial, the other might use revenue It is not important which term is correct; rather it s about helping people quickly find what they need Only after this will they be receptive to changing their terminology Advanced usage includes tags that represent actions that this user wants to take on the item, like to read, to buy, or to do One technique that is gaining popularity is tagging items with the names of people or groups that may be interested in this item For example, if you think Bob might be interested in an item, you can tag it with the keyword @bob If you think the New York sales team might want to read it, you can tag it with a group name like @ny-sales The @ symbol is a Web 20 convention for saying that a tag or a message is intended for a specific person or group, and can be very useful for instant messaging, microblogging, and folksonomies As you can see, the data in a folksonomy system is incredibly useful when it comes to helping people find content they previously tagged, and in helping new users find items of interest Folksonomy can be incredibly helpful for making recommendations to users running an enterprise search It is also useful to help validate that your navigation and taxonomy structure is satisfying the needs of your users.

Table 17-2 lists the types of behaviors each isolation level allows. As you can see, read uncommitted is the least restrictive isolation level, and serializable is the most restrictive. As mentioned previously, the default SQL Server isolation level is read committed. As the level of isolation increases, SQL Server holds more restrictive locks and holds locks for longer periods of time. Since the isolation level affects the locking behavior for SELECT statements, isolation affects the locking mode used on data that is being read.

To implement the new snapshot isolation level behaviors via read committed snapshot and snapshot isolation a new feature called row versioning is used These two snapshot options are different in that the read committed snapshot affects only statement-level locking behavior, while snapshot isolation affects an entire transactionBoth use row versioning as a means to create snapshots of modified data by storing a copy of the data image as it was before the modification (in tempdb), so that a consistent snapshot view of the data can be accessed from tempdb without blocking on writes to the actual table data and without locking the actual table data.

Row versioning is a framework that is always enabled in SQL Server 2005 because it is used by default for purposes other than for isolation levels, such as for supporting online index building, modifications made in triggers, and modifications made by multiple active result sets (MARS) sessions For the locking behavior options being discussed here, row versioning can be enabled or disabled depending on the isolation level and database options set Sizing the tempdb system database is a very important consideration with SQL Server 2005, as it is used for several enhanced features, such as for row versioning With row versioning, snapshot versions of modified rows are stored in tempdb as needed to support the various operations that utilize row versioning This space used in tempdb is called the version store There are actually two version stores, an online index build store and a common store for all other uses.

The versioned rows are stored until they are no longer needed by the transaction or operation, and then they are released for removal by a background thread that executes once per minute If a transaction is short and versioned rows are not needed for very long, the modified row or rows may not be stored beyond the buffer cache in memory, and thus may not be written to tempdb on disk (All data is written to memory first before going to disk) It is not required that a versioned row get written to disk If the row is not needed for long, it may be flushed out of the buffer cache before getting written to tempdb; thus, the disk write overhead is avoided.

Q: A:

When a row-versioning based isolation level is enabled for a database, then all data modifications for that database are row versioned, even if there are no active transactions using that isolation level This causes an increase in resource usage for data modifications Tempdb must have sufficient space allocated to hold the version stores as well It is better to allocate file space initially for tempdb than to allow the file to automatically grow, as the auto grow process can cause heavy overhead and performance degradation Tempdb may have to be very large, depending on the rate of data modifications within each database that is enabled for row-versioning isolation If disk space becomes full and the tempdb file therefore does run out of space, the Database Engine automatically.
