The snapshot replication system is different from the other replication methods in that the entire replication task takes place at once. With transactional and merge replication, a snapshot is propagated to the subscribers, and then replication is constantly being applied to these systems. Snapshot replication is a full refresh of the database and is therefore much more straight-forward. Since snapshot replication essentially takes an existing database and copies it to the distributor, then to the subscriber, the limiting performance factor in snapshot replication is the ability to move large amounts of data. Factors that can limit snapshot data include the following:

I/O performance on the publisher Since the entire database, or parts of it, is copied from the publisher, the performance of the I/O subsystem on the publisher can be a limiting factor. The snapshot task is more I/O intensive than CPU intensive, thus CPU power is not usually a factor. I/O performance on the distributor As with the publisher, the distributor receives large amounts of data at one time and at some later time distributes that data. A slow I/O subsystem bogs down transactional replication. I/O performance on the subscriber As with the other components, the distributor will attempt to distribute a database or subset of a database to the subscriber in one shot. If the I/O subsystem is inadequate, replication performance will suffer. The bandwidth of the network between the publisher, distributor, and subscriber Since large amounts of data are being transferred, the network can easily become a bottleneck. Make sure that your network does not limit replication performance.

Aquaforest : Making Your Content Findable These types of files need to be processed with optical character recognition ( OCR ) technology to create a text version of the file contents which allows a searchable PDF to be created by merging the original page images with the text. This enables the file to be searched.

As you can see, there are several factors that can limit performance. By reducing the effect of these factors by properly sizing and configuring the snapshot replication system, performance will be optimal.

Monitoring the snapshot system is done via the Windows performance monitor, perfmon. Within perfmon, there are a number of objects that are added when SQL Server

replication is present. In addition there are a number of standard perfmon objects that are useful for monitoring snapshot replication. These objects include:

Provides counts of each type of agent that is running. Provides information on distribution latency. Provides information on snapshot performance.

You can also pass the addFilter() method an instance of the Zend_Filter_* class, as shown in the following equivalent script:

These counters give you a fairly good idea of how much activity is occurring in the agent. In addition, the Snapshot Agent Status page can be a good place to find information about how the snapshot performed. In SQL Server Management Studio expand Replication, then Local Publications. Right-click on the publication that you want to monitor and select View Snapshot Agent Status. This is shown in Figure 20-43.

Tuning the snapshot system usually just involves proper configuration, as mentioned above. The critical things to look for during snapshot replication are I/O and network problems. In order to determine if you are network bound, you should look at the performance of the network and then determine if that network is sufficient for your replication needs. Let s look at an example. Suppose you have a database that is 5 GB in size. Using a 10baseT network, there is a theoretical maximum bandwidth of 10 megabit per second, which is approximately 1 MB (megabyte) per second. Thus, a 5 GB database will take 5,120 seconds, or 1.4 hours (5 GB x 1,024 (Mbyte/Gbyte)) / 1 (Mbyte/sec), to replicate this database. In contrast, a 100baseT network can perform the same replication in 8.3 minutes. In addition, a Gigabit

20

network can do this same task in 51 seconds. The network comparison is summarized in the following table:

Table 20-1 Network Speed Comparison* Network Speed 10baseT 100baseT Gigabit Theoretical Time to Perform a Snapshot of a 5 GB database 5,120 seconds or 85.3 minutes or 1.4 hours 516 seconds or 8.3 minutes 51 seconds
