I am often asked what I like best about SQL Server, and I always give the same response: the SQL Profiler and SQL Server replication. I have helped many clients implement replication with great success. In one instance, we helped replicate a call center database so that reporting functions could be offloading, thus allowing better performance and faster response times. I have also helped implement replication for a large grocery store chain. Communication between the main office and stores is done via transactional replication. Each morning, pricing data is replicated out to the stores, and each night, sales data is replicated back to the main office. Replication provides an easy to use and reliable transport mechanism for moving data. Because transactional replication keeps track of which transactions have been replication, it is unnecessary to implement complicated handshaking mechanisms. If the communication link between publisher and subscriber goes down for a while, replication will catch up when the link is reestablished. I am a fan of SQL Server replication, but especially of transactional replication. Transactional replication incurs very little overhead on the publisher, is fast, and is easy to use. The reliability and flexibilty makes SQL Server replication one of my favorite things about SQL Server. SQL Server replication is designed to replicate or copy data from one system to another. Replication allows you to replicate as little as a single table or as much as all of the tables in the database. It is very flexible and configurable. With SQL Server replication technology, the task of distributing and copying data is automated (once it has been configured and tested). No user intervention is needed to replicate data once replication has been set up and configured. Since the replication data and processing is carried out within a SQL Server database, there is additional stability and recoverability. As with any SQL Server transaction, if a failure were to occur, operations 20 resume at the point of failure once the problem was fixed. Because of this, many people prefer replication over other methods of moving data between systems. Depending on your configuration options, replication can be set up in a number of different ways. For example, you can specify how much or how little data will be replicated, you can specify whether the replicated copies will be read-only or can be modified, and you can specify how often the data is replicated.
