almost negligible. Polarized optical microscopy indicates the in-plane orientation of the dye aggregates over large areas. The spectroscopic data and in-plane XRD measurements indicate that the B67 molecules are stacked to form a column where the planar B67 molecules (light absorption transition moment) are stacked orthogonal to the column direction. The structure of the photoaligned B67 and columns are schematically indicated in Fig. 8.5. The molecular axis of B67 coincides with the direction of photooriented mesogens (parallel to LPL) of PPLC lm, and therefore, the columns are extended orthogonal to the LPL direction. The orientation of the chromonic columns of B67 aligned by the LPLirradiated PPLC lm exactly agrees with that of rodlike micelles formed by ordinary surfactant aggregates (Fukumoto et al., 2006). However, the dip coating procedure without LPL irradiation obviously brings about macroscopic alignment of the B67 columns along the lifting direction (Hara et al., 2007). The macroscopic alignment should stem from the ow orientation in this case. On the basis of these facts, micropatterning of the chromonics silica hybrid can be attained utilizing a combination of photo- and ow orientation. A patterned irradiation with LPL onto the PPLC lm is made through a photomask, and then the dip coating is achieved to prepare the chromonic silica hybrid lm. In this procedure, the directions of LPL and dipping are arranged to be consistent so that the orientation of the columns in the regions of irradiated and nonirradiated areas become orthogonal with each other.

For the synthesis of azobenzene-containing amphiphilic BCPs, the most used method, which is also the most convenient one, is the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The rst work was reported in 2002 by Tian et al. who used a hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) macroinitiator to grow a hydrophobic block of poly{11-[4-(4-butylphenylazo)phenoxy]undecyl methacrylate} that is a side-chain liquid crystalline (LC) polymer (SCLCP) (structure a in Fig. 6.2) (Tian et al., 2002). Even though this amphiphilic BCP was not synthesized and investigated for its self-assembly behavior in solution, PEO is actually a good choice as the hydrophilic block for BCP micelles having interest for possible biomedical applications. PEO is highly soluble in water, enables steric stabilization of the micelle and can inhibit the surface adsorption of biological substances, thus protecting the loaded guest (Kang et al., 2005). Following this work, a number of amphiphilic azobenzene BCPs have been synthesized using PEO macroinitiators with different azobenzene polymers (Ding et al., 2008; Yu et al., 2007a,b, 2006a,b;

By storing previously retrieved objects, Web caching can reduce object-retrieval delays and diminish the amount of Web traffic sent over the Internet Web caches can reside in a client or in an intermediate network cache server We will discuss network caching at the end of this chapter In this subsection, we restrict our attention to client caching Although Web caching can reduce user-perceived response times, it introduces a new problem -- a copy of an object residing in the cache may be stale In other words, the object housed in the Web server may have been modified since the copy was cached at the client Fortunately, HTTP has a mechanism that allows the client to employ caching while still ensuring that all objects passed to the browser are up-to-date This mechanism is called the conditional GET An HTTP request message is a so-called conditional GET message if (i) the request message uses the GET method and (ii) the request message includes an If-Modified-Since:header line To illustrate how the conditional GET operates, let's walk through an example First, a browser requests an uncached object from some Web server: GET /fruit/kiwigif HTTP/10 User-agent: Mozilla/40

Sin et al., 2005; Yu et al., 2005). Using a dibromo initiator, a dibromo PEO macroinitiator (Br-PEO-Br) was prepared and subsequently employed to grow an azobenzene polymer, yielding an amphiphilic ABA-type triblock copolymer (Tang et al., 2007). When other water-soluble polymers are used as the hydrophilic block, the direct synthesis of the hydrophilic macroinitiator using ATRP may be problematic, in contrast to PEO. For instance, ATRP cannot be used to prepare a poly(acrylic acid) macroinitiator because of the reaction between the monomer and the metal complexes (Patten and Matyjaszewski, 1998). The general approach employed to bypass the problem is to synthesize rst a diblock copolymer that is not amphiphilic and, subsequently, convert one block into the desired hydrophilic polymer through a postreaction. As a matter of fact, the rst light-controllable azobenzene BCP micelle was demonstrated using a BCP whose hydrophilic block was obtained in this fashion (structure b in Fig. 6.2) (Wang et al., 2004). A macroinitiator of poly(tert-butyl acrylate) (PtBA) was rst synthesized and then used to grow poly{6-[4-(4-methoxyphenylazo)phenoxy]hexyl methacroylate} (PAzoMA). The resulting diblock copolymer PtBA-b-PAzoMA was rendered amphiphilic by subsequent hydrolysis of PtBA giving rise to the hydrophilic poly(acrylic acid) (PAA). The selective cleavage of tBA groups is possible because
