The tracing capabilities of SQL Server give you extremely powerful tools for tuning and for other purposes as well. One of the great benefits tracing has over other external tools is that you get information about events that took place within the server in various components. Tracing allows you to troubleshoot performance problems, application behavior, deadlocks, audit information, and so much more. I demonstrated using traces for collecting performance workload data earlier in the book. Make sure you go over the guidelines for tracing that I provided earlier. I'll also demonstrate tracing to troubleshoot deadlocks in Inside T-SQL Programming . At the end of this chapter, I'll point you to additional resources that cover tracing and Profiler.

any developer-written code from calling them; the CLR is always capable of calling a type constructor . Important While you can define a type constructor within a value type, you should never actually do this because there are times when the CLR will not call a value type s static type constructor . Here is an example:

2. You are the administrator for a large network consisting of 10 domains. You have configured a standard primary zone for the mfg.lucernepublishing.com domain on a DNS server computer named Server1. You have also configured a UNIX server, named Server2, to host a secondary zone for the same domain. The UNIX server is running BIND 8.2.1. You notice that zone transfers between the primary and secondary servers seem to generate more traffic than expected, putting a strain on network resources. What can you do to decrease the network burden of zone transfers between the primary and secondary servers a. Clear the BIND Secondaries check box on Server1. b. Configure a boot file on Server1 to initialize BIND-compatible settings. c. Select the BIND Secondaries check box on Server1. d. Configure a boot file on Server2 to enable fast zone transfers. 3. What is the function of round robin Which feature takes priority, round robin or netmask ordering

4. You are the chief network administrator for the Proseware company network, which has four branch offices. Each branch office has its own LAN, which is con nected to the Internet using a T1 line. Through virtual private network (VPN) con nectivity over the Internet, a single intranet is maintained and replicated over Web servers at each branch office. The four Web servers have unique IP addresses but share a single FQDN, intranet.proseware.com, as shown in Figure 5-30.

The Database Engine Tuning Advisor (DTA) is an enhanced tool that was formerly called Index Tuning Wizard in SQL Server 2000. DTA will give you index design recommendations based on an analysis of a workload that you give it as input. The input workload can be a trace file or table, and it can also be a script file containing T-SQL queries. One benefit of DTA is that it uses SQL Server's optimizer to make cost estimationsthe same optimizer that generates execution plans for your queries. DTA generates statistics and hypothetical indexes, which it uses in its cost estimations. Among the new features in SQL Server 2005 available in DTA are partitioning recommendations for tables and indexes. Note that you can run DTA in batch mode by using the dta.exe command-line utility.

The calling of a type constructor is a tricky thing When the just-in-time (JIT) compiler is compiling a method, it sees what types are referenced in the code If any of the types define a type constructor, the JIT compiler checks if the type s type constructor has already been executed for this AppDomain If the constructor has never executed, the JIT compiler emits a call to the type constructor into the native code that the JIT compiler is emitting If the type constructor for the type has already executed, the JIT compiler does not emit the call since it knows that the type is already initialized (For an example of this, see the Type Constructor Performance section later in this chapter ) Now, after the method has been JIT-compiled, the thread starts to execute it and will eventually get to the code that calls the type constructor .
