Some containers and components have designers and some just have properties. There doesn t seem to be a hard and fast rule as to which ones have which. Generally speaking, though, right-clicking on the item and selecting Edit if the option exists reveals all. Microsoft has apparently made a design decision to include a UI for almost all of the containers and executables even where dynamic values can be set effectively and easily in the Properties pane to provide a more friendly experience and shallower learning curve. The story doesn t end there, however. Any SSIS component that exposes properties has a UI, even when it wasn t built with one; SSIS very kindly offers Advanced Properties, which presents these exposed properties in a dialog UI format. It isn t a custom interface (nor is it customizable), but it does provide transparency to properties in a graphical way. When it comes to creating your own custom components, the choice of whether to include a UI should be based on your own criteria. Sometimes, of course, inclusion of a UI is a necessity.

As the term precedence constraints implies, certain logical requirements are behind their use. At least two objects must be in a package before it is possible to consider the criteria of how processing moves between them. Precedence constraints are limited to use within the Control Flow. This makes logical sense, since precedence constraints constrain exactly how processing passes between Control Flow elements. In Figure 5-8, I select a context-menu option to create the simple completion precedence constraint shown in Figure 5-9. In a precedence relationship, the constrainer and constrainee get names: the precedence executable is the source of the constraint (and comes before the constraint), and the constrained executable is the component that follows. Without precedence constraints, the SSIS runtime engine would make a decision on execution order. As far as I can work out, the order seems to be based upon an internal identifier on each object that effectively reflects the order in which you added the executables. The lesson here is that if you want to control the execution order, use precedence constraints! The only other case where execution order is decided by the runtime is within a package with a branching Control Flow. Normal, orderly service resumes once the runtime comes across the next constraint.

When we talk about services, we have two roles: the service and the service consumer. The consumer is any system using the functions of a service. It could be another service, a Windows application, or anything else capable of communication with the service. No consumer should ever be in contact with the inner logic of a service. You must develop the services so that they are accessible only when you send a message to them with a wish to get the service performed (see Figure 4-1). It s the logic of the service that handles the message and determines whether to process the request.

Figure 5-9. A simple precedence constraint In this case, since I ve already created the precedence constraint, I can edit the existing constraint by choosing Edit from the context menu. This opens the Precedence Constraint Editor, which shows in Figure 5-10 that I ve chosen an expression as the evaluation operation. (Obviously, I ve entered a spurious expression in Figure 5-10 that will never evaluate to True, but the principle is there.) Notice also the Multiple constraints section at the bottom of the window in Figure 5-10. This controls the behavior of how multiple constraints are evaluated.

Figure 10-10. Using a query parameter to maintain the product ID To implement this idea, create the cart.page.xml file alongside the cart.xhtml page (in the view folder). The content is shown in Listing 10-13. The key is the <param> tag. It is read by both the <s:button> when generating the URL and Seam when handling the request. The former reads the EL expression and stores the result into the specified query parameter. The latter does the opposite: it reads the specified query parameter and stores the result into the EL expression. Listing 10-13. Using <param> to Maintain the Product ID with a Query Parameter

Figure 4-1. Services communicate through messages and nothing else. There is no other way to interact with a service but to send a message to it and get a return message in response (see Figure 4-2). The schema of the service defines the format of the individual messages that the service handles that is, which messages and formats it accepts, and which response messages and formats it returns. The service contract defines the allowable sequences of messages that the service accepts.
