Reflection prevents type safety at compile time . Since reflection uses strings heavily, you lose type safety at compile time . For example, if you call Type.GetType("Jef"); to ask reflection to find a type called Jef in an assembly that has a type called Jeff, the code compiles but produces an error at runtime because you accidentally misspelled the type name passed as the argument . Reflection is slow . When using reflection, the names of types and their members are not known at compile time; you discover them at runtime by using a string name to identify each type and member . This means that reflection is constantly performing string searches as the types in the System.Reflection namespace scan through an assembly s metadata . Often, the string searches are case-insensitive comparisons, which can slow this down even more .

Correct Answers: D A. Incorrect: This configuration seems at first glance to be OK. The subnet mask has been reduced by a single 1 and the addresses are contiguous. However, let us look at the third octet: The subnet mask is 11111110 ANDing with 13 00001101 Gives 00001100 The subnet mask is 11111110 ANDing with 14 00001110 Gives 00001110 So the two networks would have different network addresses given a /23 (255.255.254.0) subnet mask. B. Incorrect: This supernetted network is valid: 206.10.12/22 with a host range 206.10.12.1 through 206.10.15.254. However, the networks allocated to your orga nization are 206.10.13.0/24 and 206.10.14.0/24, and an allowable configuration must not advertise addresses outside these networks. C. Incorrect: 225.225.253.0 is not a valid subnet mask. D. Correct: Two Class B subnets can be supernetted only if they are contiguous and the lower of the two values in the third octet is an even number. Note that this is not a trick. It is a real-world situation that can have serious consequences. Before the need for summarization was fully understood, Class C networks were regularly allocated that were contiguous, yet could not be summarized as a single supernet. You must know how to recognize this situation if you come across it in your professional career.

Invoking a member by using reflection will also hurt performance . When using reflection to invoke a method, you must first package the arguments into an array; internally, reflection must unpack these on to the thread s stack . Also, the CLR must check that the arguments are of the correct data type before invoking a method . Finally, the CLR ensures that the caller has the proper security permission to access the member being invoked . For all of these reasons, it s best to avoid using reflection to access a field or invoke a method/property . If you re writing an application that will dynamically discover and construct type instances, you should take one of the following approaches:

Correct Answers: A, C, and E A. Correct: Mask = 255.255.255.128 Increment = 256 128 = 128 Because 128 is not a factor of 64 (64 is not divisible by 128), this network is not valid. B. Incorrect: Mask = 255.255.255.192 Increment = 256 192 = 64 64 is a factor of 192, so this network is valid.

Besides having the ability to design good indexes, it is also important to be able to identify which indexes are used more heavily and which are rarely or never used. You don't want to keep indexes that are rarely used, as they do have negative performance effects on modifications. In SQL Server 2000, the only available techniques to determine index usage were very awkward, to say the least. For example, you could take a script that contains a representative sampling of the queries that run in the system and produce textual SHOWPLAN information for the queries in the script. You could write an application that parses the output, extracts the names of the indexes that are used, and calculates index usage statistics. Obviously, it's a problematic technique that also requires a fair amount of effort. Another option you could use in SQL Server 2000 is to run the Index Tuning Wizard (ITW) based on a sample workload. Among the reports that ITW generates is a report that shows you usage statistics of the existing indexes for the input queries. In SQL Server 2005, you have much more powerful and convenient tools to work with. You get a DMF called dm_db_index_operational_stats and a DMV called dm_db_index_usage_stats . The dm_db_index_operational_stats DMF gives you low-level I/O, locking, latching, and access method activity information. You provide the function a database ID, object ID, index ID (or 0 for a heap), and partition ID. You can also request information about multiple entities by specifying a NULL in the relevant argument. For example, to get information about all objects, indexes, and partitions in the Performance database, you would invoke the function as follows: SELECT * FROM sys.dm_db_index_operational_stats( DB_ID('Performance'), null, null, null);
