HOMER models a particular system con guration by performing an hourly time series simulation of its operation over one year. HOMER steps through the year one hour at a time, calculating the available renewable power, comparing it to the electric load, and deciding what to do with surplus renewable power in times of excess, or how best to generate (or purchase from the grid) additional power in times of de cit. When it has completed one year s worth of calculations, HOMER determines whether the system satis es the constraints imposed by the user on such quantities as the fraction of the total electrical demand served, the proportion of power generated by renewable sources, or the emissions of certain pollutants. HOMER also computes the quantities required to calculate the system s life-cycle cost, such as the annual fuel consumption, annual generator operating hours, expected battery life, or the quantity of power purchased annually from the grid. The quantity HOMER uses to represent the life-cycle cost of the system is the total net present cost (NPC). This single value includes all costs and revenues that occur within the project lifetime, with future cash ows discounted to the present. The total net present cost includes the initial capital cost of the system components, the cost of any component replacements that occur within the project lifetime, the cost of maintenance and fuel, and the cost of purchasing power from the grid. Any revenue from the sale of power to the grid reduces the total NPC. In Section 15.6 we describe in greater detail how HOMER calculates the total NPC. For many types of micropower systems, particularly those involving intermittent renewable power sources, a one-hour time step is necessary to model the behavior

A 1995 study entitled Apparent Usability vs Inherent Usability: Experimental Analysis on the Determinants of the Apparent Usability by Masaaki Kurosu and Kaori Kashimura showed that when people had a choice of using one of two automated teller machines (ATMs) with the same functions, but one had an aesthetically pleasant user interface and the other was less beautiful, users, in general, were much more adept at using the pleasant-looking interface, even though the layout of the controls were similar to the less beautiful one, but just more pleasing to look at. This study, performed in Japan was replicated in 1997 by Noam Tractinsky in Israel with even more dramatic results.

Complete the rest of the procedure as you would for a local printer (see the Adding a Local Printer in Red Hat section earlier in this chapter). The result is new entries in the /etc/cups/cupsd.conf and printers.conf files. This /etc/cups/printers.conf entry shows the printer entry just created:

If no such entry appears, create the entry. Create the mount point directory (as root user, type mkdir /mnt/camera).

Provide specific examples for each of the above categories from your own experience, when you have become frustrated with an interactive device (e.g., telephone, VCR, vending machine, PDA, computer). In doing this, write down any further types of frustration that come to mind. Then prioritize them in terms of how annoying they are. What are the worst types

drives are not mounted at boot time. Definitions are put in the fstab file for floppy and CD drives so that they can be mounted in the future (as described later). I also added one line for /dev/hda1, which enables me to mount the Windows (vfat) partition on my computer so I don t have to always boot Windows to get at the files on my Windows partition.

hen there are more than two controls overlapping, you can precisely control their position in the Z-order rather than simply sending them to the front or back. Click the arrow next to the Bring to Front or Send to Back button on the ribbon and you ll see Bring Forward and Send Backward commands. These commands move the selected control one position in the indicated order. For example, if you had three overlapping controls, selecting the one at the top of the Z-order and using the Send Backward command would result in that control being at position 2 and the control that was at position 2 being at the top of the Z-order.
