You may consider adding a few environment variables to your .bashrc file. These can help make working with the shell more efficient and effective: n TMOUT Sets how long the shell can be inactive before bash automatically exits. The value is the number of seconds for which the shell has not received input. This can be a nice security feature, in case you leave your desk while you are still logged in to Linux. So as not to be logged off while you are working, you may want to set the value to something like TMOUT=1800 (to allow 30 minutes of idle time). You can use any terminal session to close the current shell after a set number of seconds, for example TMOUT=30. n PATH As described earlier, the PATH variable sets the directories that are searched for commands you use. If you often use directories of commands that are not in your PATH, you can permanently add them. To do this, add a PATH variable to your .bashrc file. For example, to add a directory called /getstuff/bin, add the following:

The fact that deployment environments may be different from the development environment needs to be considered as you develop and test the software. Yes, Java is the write once, run anywhere language, and this eases the task considerably; this is the reason that we are able to develop an application on one system and deploy it on another. Every so often, though, you will find that enterprise software written on one platform may be difficult to get working on another J2EE platform. There are, however, some basic rules that can be followed to ensure that your software moves easily to a new platform:

In March of 1992, the IETF solicited proposals to enhance SNMPvl. A team consisting of Jeffrey Case, Keith McCloghrie, Marshall Rose, and Steven Waldbusser prepared a proposal called the Simple Management Protocol (SMP). At about the same time, the IETF initiated another effort aimed at enhancing SNMP security. These two research efforts merged and became known as version 2 of the Internet-standard Network Management Framework, or simply the SNMPv2 framework. The new documentation comprised more than 400 pages in twelve documents (RFCs 1441 to 1452). RFC 1441, Introduction to version 2 of the Internet-standard Network Management Framework [ 12-19], provided an overview of the remaining documents. Unfortunately, the first SNMPv2 design (which is now referred to as Party-based SNMPv2) was not widely accepted in the marketplace. Frequently cited reasons were the complexities of the security enhancements and the administrative framework. The SNMPv2 Working Group reconvened in late 1994 to consider several simplified approaches for the administrative framework; however, no consensus was reached. As a result, three actions occurred: 1. Documents that had the consensus of the SNMPv2 Working Group were published in January 1996 as RFCs 1902-1908. 2. Minor modifications to the SNMPv2 Security and Administrative model, called Community-based SNMPv2 (or SNMPV~C), published in January 1996 as RFC 1901 were [ 1 2-20]. 3. Work continued on the unfinished elements: security, administrative framework, a remote configuration MIB, and Manager-to-Manager communication. (Much of that work is now published as SNMPv3, which is the subject of Section 12.6.) The major enhancements included in SNMPv2 were: new data types, new macros, textual conventions, protocol operations that facilitate bulk data transfers, richer error codes, and multiprotocol transport support. Section 12.5 will discuss these key enhancements in the SNMPv2c framework and provide a background for an understanding of the current protocol, SNMPv3.

Note that if you used the techniques described in 16 to obtain a summary for the Domain object, you d get slightly different results. The primary reason for this is that the syntax often reports 1 as the highest value when a property restriction can be turned off with a setting of 0. Another interpretation for this is that there isn t an upper range when the property is turned off.

For this example, I ll use the second method to tell the shell exactly where my script le is located. Remember, to reference a le in the current directory, you can use the single dot operator in the shell:
