The brarchive is the utility provided by SAP to back up the Oracle archived redo log files. Backing up the archived log files is required for having a consistent backup and recovery strategy. You can only perform point in time recoveries or partial database recoveries by having the archived redo log files conveniently saved. For recovery procedures, all the archived redo log files from the last consistent backup must be available in the correct sequence. If any redo log file is missing, a recovery will only be possible up to the gap point. Actually, the archived files are essential for recovering logical error situations, such as the erroneous deletion of system objects. If you want to restore the situation up to the point before the deletion, you can only do it with the archived log files. The brarchive utility is called from the sapdba menu or invoked in the command line. By default, the archived redo log files are automatically written by the Oracle archiver process in the saparch directory. The location can be changed by altering the parameter in the init<sid>.ora file. This directory must have been conveniently sized. But it's as important to define a convenient strategy for backing up and then deleting the archived redo log files from this directory, since these archived files are being constantly populated as the users work with the system. If this directory becomes full and no more archives can be written, the system issues the archiver stuck problem message, which will stop the database operation.
