Locking a batch input session prevents the session from being run until a specified date. Locking sessions might be useful for avoiding unwanted sessions (such as incorrect sessions) from being run or for setting specific run dates and also for preventing unintentional runs. To lock sessions, select them from the overview list and then choose Session Lock from the menu bar. The system will display a dialog box asking you to enter the date up to which it must hold the lock. To unlock a locked session, mark the session and select Session Unlock from the menu. The system removes the lock date.

Batch input sessions are internally managed in the sessions queue (table APQI). You can display management information about a particular session by selecting it from the overview list and then choosing Goto Queue from the menu. Figure B 7 shows an example.

A sentinel is a special value of an input variable that is used to terminate the input loop. In the example above, the value 0 is used as a sentinel.

The most important session queue management fields are as follows: GROUPID. Contains the session name. QID. The internal identification of a session. MANDANT. Indicates the client in which a session is to be processed. QSTATE. It's either blank or contains a character indicating the status of the batch input session. For example, E indicates error. QERASE. It's a control flag which indicates whether the session will be automatically deleted. If it is not marked, it indicates that the KEEP option is set. If it contains the X mark, it indicates that it will be deleted after successful processing.

With regard to batch input sessions, system administrator tasks mainly consist of the following: Submitting the background jobs for automatic batch input session processing Checking the sessions log every day and informing developers of errors Cleaning up the session queue and the log files The batch input log file is normally located in the SAP system global directory (/usr/sap/<SID>/SYS/global) with the name BI<SID><Instance_name>. When a session log is manually deleted, the system sets a deletion flag, but it does not remove the occupied space. To physically restore the log space, a reorganization of this file is needed. You can clean up old session log files by performing a log reorganization. To do that, from the session log list display, select Folder Reorganize logs. The system displays a selection screen where you can enter what session logs to delete or specify to remove logs older than n days.
