hen you add date fields to a pivot table, you can show the dates individually, or group them into larger units, such as years, quarters, or months. This adds flexibility to the pivot table, and enables you to do things like comparing the results from one year to another, or creating a running total by quarter. You can also group numeric fields, when you add them to the Row Labels or Column Labels area of the pivot table. By using this feature, you can group the numbers into larger chunks, such as groups of 10 or 25. If comparing test scores, or results by age, you can look at larger segments of the population, instead of individual scores or ages. It s also possible to manually group text items in the Row Labels and Column Labels areas, so you can group cities into a region, or employees into teams, and summarize the data for the group. Most of the time, grouping goes smoothly, but you may hit snags, or see error messages when you try to group the data in your pivot table. This chapter addresses those problems, and provides solutions or workarounds for the issues you might encounter. This chapter also covers problems that may arise when summarizing pivot table results in subtotals and grand totals, and when summarizing fields in the Values area. Except where noted, the problems in this chapter are based on the Stores.xlsx sample workbook.

In these examples, we use Ant properties and environment variables on the remote system. Environment variables can be used to great advantage during deployment, as the remote site itself can be preconfigured with information about where to deploy things. Apart from property expansion, Ant performs no transformations to the command string: file paths must be in the appropriate format for the target server. There is a nice task called <pathconvert> that can turn a path into a property in the appropriate form for both Unix and Windows; you may find this convenient in preparing data for this task. To use the <telnet> task, as we stated before, <read> and <write> statements need to be interlaced, with commands being issued after responses are received. Listing 18.2 shows this.

The Singleton pattern5 solves the problem of instantiating a class that is reused by multiple clients that don t know about each other. The classical singleton implementation doesn t consider how the class is instantiated or from where it s instantiated. It also doesn t consider how the data of the singleton is exposed. Those issues are delegated, but the implementation of the classical singleton has to be dramatically modified. The reason why you do need to consider threading and a reader-writer is because singletons are nasty from a resource and performance point of view and need more functionality to be useful. Singletons are also nasty because they are so simple to implement. The problem with the Singleton pattern is that the implementation doesn t make a reader aware of the ramifications. In the simplest terms, a singleton is a like a global variable there can only be a single instance. Yet let s think about this: does it mean a single instance per application That isn t entirely correct, because when an application is composed of multiple AppDomains, then it includes multiple singletons. So what does a singleton really mean The answer is that there is no answer because a singleton depends on the scope. For example, it s possible to create a singleton per AppDomain, or a singleton per application, or a singleton per user, or a singleton per computer, or a singleton per group configuration. And yet all of these singletons aren t implemented as many Singleton patterns are implemented today.
