Description A port is either a COM port or an LPT port to which an external modem is attached, or it is a COM port name that identifies an internal or PCMCIA modem. Windows XP Professional automatically assigns a port name (COM1, COM2, COM3, or COM4) to any device it detects. Usually, the port name is adjusted only if you move an external modem from one COM port to another. For PCMCIA modems, the port cannot be changed. Sets the volume for the telephone speaker, which broadcasts the dial tone, modem connection, and voices, if applicable, on the other end. To change the volume, move the slider bar to the right or left. Sets the speed at which Windows XP Professional communicates with the modem. It is limited by the central processing unit (CPU) speed of the computer and the speed supported by the communications port. Windows XP Professional selects a conservative default speed so that slower computers do not lose data during transfers. You can set the speed lower if the faster rate causes data errors. Set it higher for faster performance. For example, 57,600 might work better than the Windows XP Professional default setting of 38,400 for v.32bis (14,400 bps) modems on fast computers. If applications report data errors, set a lower speed. (For example, change it from 38,400 to 19,200 for v.32bis modems.)

For the datetime and smalldatetime data types, the date value is stored as 0, meaning that the date is the base of January 1, 1900 . For the other types that store a date, the date value is stored as 693595, which represents the number of days after the new internal base date of January 1, 0001. To compute the corresponding date, you can use the dateadd function:

In the early 1970s, three Stanford academics, Whitfield Diffie, Martin Hellman, and Ralph Merkle, had an idea What if knowing the encryption key didn t mean that you automatically knew the decryption key What if it was so hard to find the decryption key from the encryption key that you could publish your encryption key openly Then, anyone who wanted to send you a message could simply look up your published encryption key, encrypt the message with that, and send it to you Only you would know what the corresponding decryption key was; only you could decrypt the message No one else could crack it, even if they knew the publicly published encryption key This was the basic idea of public key cryptography Having the idea was one thing, but finding a way to make it work was another.

Delays that occur while users view content on Web pages also commonly known as think times represent the answers to questions such as How long does it take a user to enter their login credentials and How much time will users spend reading this page You can use several different methods to estimate think times associated with user activities on your Web site The best method, of course, is to use real data collected about your production site This is rarely possible, however, because testing generally occurs before the site is released to production This necessitates making educated guesses or approximations regarding activity on the site.

Diffie, Hellman, and Merkle tried to come up with a workable method They managed to find a method, known as the Diffie-Hellman key agreement, for two people to agree on a shared, secret symmetric key using only public messages It was nice, but it wasn t public key encryption The discovery of a true public key encryption system was left to Ron Rivest, Adi Shamir, and Leonard Adelman, who were working at MIT Their system, named the RSA cryptosystem after them, was based on the difficulty of finding the divisors of large numbers (a process known as factoring) Not only does the public key method let others send you encrypted messages, but it has another nice property: if you encrypt a message with your private key, only your public key can decrypt it properly.

The most commonly useful methods of determining this include the following: When testing a Web site that is already in production, you can determine the actual values and distribution by extracting the average and standard deviation for user viewing (or typing) time from the log file for each page With this information, you can easily determine the think time for each page Your production site may also have Web traffic monitoring software that provides this type of information directly If you have no log files, you can run simple in-house experiments using employees, customers, clients, friends, or family members to determine, for example, the page-viewing time differences between new and returning users This type of simplified usability study tends to be a highly effective method of data collection for Web sites that have never been live, as well as validation of data collected by using other methods.
