IP addresses are 32-bits long, and while not all that complicated, most Internet users don t bother to memorize the dotted decimal addresses of their systems. Instead, they use natural language host names. Most hosts, then, must maintain a comparative table of both numeric IP addresses and natural language names. From a host perspective, however, the names are worthless; they must use the numeric identifiers for routing purposes. Because the Internet continues to grow at a rapid clip, a system was needed to manage the growing list of new Internet domains. That system is the DNS. It is a distributed database that stores host names and IP address information for all of the recognized domains found on the Internet. For every domain there is an authoritative name server that contains all DNS-related information about that domain, and every domain has at least one secondary name server that also contains the information. A total of thirteen root servers, in turn, maintain a list of all of the authoritative name servers. How does the DNS actually work When a system needs another system s IP address based upon its host name, the inquiring system issues a DNS request to a local name server. Depending on the contents of its local database, the local name server may be able to respond to the request. If not, it forwards the request to a root server. The root server, in turn, consults its own database and determines the most likely name server for the request and forwards it appropriately.

The EXECUTE IMMEDIATE statement provides one-step support for dynamic statement execution. As described previously, the DBMS goes through all five steps of Figure 18-1 for the dynamically executed statement. The overhead of this process can be very significant if your program executes many dynamic statements, and it s wasteful if the statements to be executed are identical or very similar. In practice, the EXECUTE IMMEDIATE statement should be used only for one-time statements that will be executed once by a program and then never executed again. To deal with the large overhead of the one-step approach, dynamic SQL offers an alternative, two-step method for executing SQL statements dynamically. In practice, this two-step approach, separating statement preparation and statement execution, is used for all SQL statements in a program that is executed more than once, and especially for those that are executed repeatedly, hundreds or thousands of times, in response to user interaction. Here is an overview of the two-step technique: 1. The program constructs a SQL statement string in a buffer, just as it does for the EXECUTE IMMEDIATE statement. A question mark ( ) can be substituted for a constant anywhere in the statement text to indicate that a value for the constant will be supplied later. The question mark is called a parameter marker. 2. The PREPARE statement asks the DBMS to parse, validate, and optimize the statement and to generate an application plan for it. This is Step 1 of the DBMS interaction. The DBMS sets the SQLCODE/SQLSTATE values to indicate any errors found in the statement and retains the application plan for later execution. Note that the DBMS does not execute the plan in response to the PREPARE statement.

Now that you ve seen how to create a navigation program using Hyperlinks, let s take a closer look at the components that make up a navigation program. At the highest level, these include the Page objects and a navigation host, as shown in Figure 14-6. The Page contains the content displayed to the user. The Page class is similar to the Window class but is a bit simpler. Page objects are designed to be used, or hosted, inside a navigation host. The navigation host implements and coordinates the navigation features. It has two main subcomponents. The NavigationService takes care of locating and loading the next page to display the target page. The journal keeps track of the navigation history for the Forward and Back buttons.
