We mentioned previously that one important benefit of partitioning is the ability to design aggregations differently for each partition. Proper design aggregation is a balancing act between the impact on processing, the additional storage required for aggregations, and the effect on query performance. From a practical perspective, you don t need to worry much about aggregations if you don t have data large enough to require adding partitions to your cube. For large data volumes, aggregations help Analysis Services respond to queries more quickly. As an example, if I ask for yearly sales data and if an aggregated value for each year is already stored, Analysis Services can return those values rather than compute the sum of each year at query time. Analysis Services uses a special algorithm to factor the number of attributes against the number of rows in a partition so that it can weigh the cost of calculating and storing the aggregation against the benefit of having the aggregation ready to respond to a query. You use the Aggregation Design Wizard to provide counts by partition and by attribute as input values for the algorithm. You can start this wizard on the Partitions tab of the cube designer in Visual Studio, or you can start it from the Partitions folder in SQL

Server Management Studio. To design aggregations in SQL Server Management Studio, follow these steps: 1. Start SQL Server Management Studio, and connect to Analysis Services. In the Object Explorer of SQL Server Management Studio, expand the Cubes folder in any database, and then expand one of the nested Measure Groups. Right-click the Partitions folder, and then click Design Aggregations. Click Next to skip the Welcome page of the wizard. 2. On the Select Partitions To Modify page of the wizard, select the partitions for which you want to design aggregations. Click Next. Note Because you can design both storage mode and aggregations using this wizard, any storage settings you might have previously defined for the selected partitions are replaced by the storage mode you select on the next page of the wizard. 3. Change the storage setting if desired, and then click Next. 4. On the Specify Object Counts page of the wizard, click Count. The wizard counts rows in the fact table and in the partition. You can also enter an Estimated Count or a Partition Count directly. Estimated Count is the default count for the partition, but if you type a Partition Count, the number you provide is used instead of Estimated Count. The wizard won t design aggregations if both counts are zero. Click Next. Note

There is considerably more to learn about working with counts on this page of the wizard to design efficient aggregations. This example produces a reasonable design but perhaps not the most optimal one that could be created for your data volumes. Refer to the books recommended at the beginning of this chapter for more complete coverage of this topic.

5. On the Set Aggregation Options page of the wizard, click Performance Gain Reaches, change the corresponding percentage value if desired, and then click Start. The wizard reviews all possible aggregations that are expected to produce the specified performance gain (unless you click Stop). Usually, the default performance gain setting of 30% percent is adequate. You can repeat this process with different percentages and test the cube by running queries to gauge the effect of adding or decreasing aggregations. When the wizard finishes its calculations, the number of aggregations that have been designed displays at the bottom of the page, as shown in Figure 22-19 in which the default value of 30 was retained. Click Next.

6. You can choose to process the partition now, which includes calculating and storing the aggregations, or you can save the aggregation design if you want to defer processing to a later time. Click Finish. Note

If you have C# .NET installed in Visual Studio 2005, you can open the AMOBrowser sample application included by Microsoft. To launch the samples installer, click Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Samples in the Microsoft SQL Server 2005/Documentation and Tutorials/Samples program group. Then, using Visual Studio, open the AMOBrowser.sln in the <drive>:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Samples\AnalysisServices\Programmability\AMO\AmoBrowser\CS folder.

The Aggregation Design Wizard uses a mathematical algorithm to determine optimal aggregations based on data density, but it s entirely possible that end users create queries that never use the resulting aggregation. Of course, that defeats the whole purpose of using processing time and disk storage space in the first place. You want aggregations that help user queries run faster, but there s no way to know in advance what those queries might be. Consequently, the Aggregation Design Wizard is merely an interim step so that you have some aggregations that might help some queries and, if you re lucky, most aggregations will help many queries.
