Overridden methods allow C# to support runtime polymorphism. Polymorphism is essential to object-oriented programming for one reason: It allows a general class to specify methods that will be common to all of its derivatives, while allowing derived classes to define the specific implementation of some or all of those methods. Overridden methods are another way that C# implements the one interface, multiple methods aspect of polymorphism. Part of the key to applying polymorphism successfully is understanding that the base classes and derived classes form a hierarchy that moves from lesser to greater specialization. Used correctly, the base class provides all elements that a derived class can use directly. Through virtual methods, it also defines those methods that the derived class can implement on its own. This allows the derived class flexibility, yet still enforces a consistent interface. Thus, by combining inheritance with overridden methods, a base class can define the general form of the methods that will be used by all of its derived classes.

ward from their bodies. The jelly sh with its many radiating arms, of course, is a typical radiolarian. In these animals, there is no head or rear end, nor left or right side. They do not show the characteristic of cephalization. There is, however, both a superior (soo-PEER-e-or) portion of the animal lying above (superi) most of the body, and an inferior (in-FEER-e-or) portion lying below (inferi). (Go back and review Figure 10.2 to see these terms of relative body position.)

Voice verification, voice recognition, and speech synthesis (text to speech) are all speech technologies that were made possible though the study and analysis of human speech production These technologies coevolved together with the advancement of computer science and digital signal processing Pioneering research efforts into speech technology were initially interested in voice recognition and speech synthesis Engineers and researchers sought to understand the mechanics of speech production as a means to synthesize speech The goal was (and still is) to instruct computers to understand, reproduce, and generate understandable speech to converse with computers and to have them understand Gunnar Fant, a Swedish engineer, published the first physiological model describing the acoustics of speech production in 1960 Fant s well-referenced model was based on a series of diagrams obtained by x-raying the head and vocal tract during the utterance of common vowel sounds and phonemes (components of speech).

7 In the late 1960s and early 1970s Dr Joseph Perkell, currently a Senior Research Scientist at MIT, extended Fant s models by using x-ray motion pictures to trace outlines of the tongue and jaw8 Other laboratories participated in related projects during the 1960s, all striving to create a speech synthesizer as a computer output device (recall that punch cards were the alternative in those days) Notably, IBM Research Laboratory in San Jose, California, conducted a series of projects known as TASS (Terminal Analog Speech Synthesizer) TASS-II (1961 1967) read phonetically spelled punch cards and mapped them into diphones (vowel-consonant pairs), which were in turn fed to a digital-analog converter for audio output TASS-III (1967 1970) enhanced the basic functions to include graphic display and online diphone creation Ultimately, TASS-IV (1980 1985) realized the goal of text-to-speech through the concatenation of diphones.

earlier in the Popular CPU Chips section. The address and data buses described there are both part of the processor bus. Another type of bus is the memory bus, which is located on the motherboard and is used by the processor to access memory.
