What really should be avoided is creating a situation where all available memory is eaten up by buffers. This causes the buffers to be written out to the disk temporarily and, of course, this has a big performance impact. Ultimately it is not always possible to ensure that buffers do not get spooled to the disk. Even the most aggressive buffer strategies using the most memory-efficient components can be tripped up by a solution requirement necessitating the use of a more memory-intensive operation. In those cases, having the buffer spooling out to a disk on a separate high-speed channel can have a suitable performance difference. To change the spooling location, two properties of the Data Flow task must be modified BufferTempStoragePath and BLOBTempStoragePath. With careful and appropriate use, increasing the size of the buffers can yield a performance increase. The problem is that careless use will dramatically degrade performance because buffers start to get spooled to the disk. Buffers are governed by a number of properties exposed at Data Flow level, shown in Table 12-5. Careful thought should be given to changing these values, because they can directly cause negative performance. On the other side of the coin, changing these settings can have dramatic performance benefits. Table 12-5.
