The usual trick was to create a palette of colors, assigning the values however the designer saw fit. If a program needed to show a color that wasn t in the palette, it picked the closest match (which sometimes wasn t very close). Since monitor phosphors could show far more information than the system could supply, the palette could be redesigned with different goals in mind: making text and windowing systems look good, making computer graphics such as logos look good, making photos look good, and so on.
