The taskbar and the Start menu are the two main liaisons between the end user and his or her computer. The taskbar defines for the user the files and programs that are cur rently open and running and the programs that are running in the background. The taskbar also allows the user to switch easily between open files and applications, group items, and open the most often used programs quickly. The Start menu provides access to the other available programs, network places, connections, help and support files, recent documents, and more.

We will now look at an equivalent program, but with a few more options, e.g., using Image::Magick. This program has more options because there are more possibilities for watermarking images with Image::Magick.

Notice that some values have changed (make, model, and year), but others haven t, like the name and mileage. This tool isn t terribly useful for this program, but it allows you to do some nifty tricks in user interface code. For example, you could have something like Apple s Aperture Lift and Stamp tool, which lets you move some, but not all, alterations you made to a picture onto other pictures. You could lift all of the attributes using dictionaryWithValuesForKeys and let the contents of the dictionary drive all the stuff displayed in the user interface. The user can take stuff out of the dictionary and then use this modified dictionary to change the other pictures using setValuesForKeysWithDictionary. If you design your user interface classes the right way, you can use the same lift and stamp panel with disparate things like photos, cars, and recipes. You might wonder what happens with nil values, such as a car with no name, because dictionaries can t contain nil values. Think back to 7, where [NSNull null] is used to represent nil values. The same thing happens here. For a no-name car, [NSNull null] will be returned under the @"name" when you call dictionaryWithValuesForKeys, and you can supply [NSNull null] for a setValuesForKeysWithDictionary to do the same, but in reverse.

There are four primary types of Ant tasks: Core or built-in Tasks that work out-of-the-box and are immediately available for use with a properly configured Ant installation. Most of the tasks that were covered in previous chapters are core tasks, such as <javac>, <jar>, and <copy>. Optional Tasks that ship natively with Ant (in its optional.jar) but typically require libraries or external programs that do not ship with Ant. A couple of optional tasks <junit> and <junitreport> were covered previously. The <junit> task requires the JUnit library and <junitreport> requires an XSLT engine neither of these components ships with Ant. Third-party Tasks that were developed by others and which can be dropped into an Ant installation. Custom Tasks that you have written and compiled yourself. These terms can cause some confusion, especially when discussing the difference between core tasks and optional tasks. This chapter deals with optional and thirdparty tasks only. Custom task development is covered in chapter 20. Core tasks are covered throughout this book in all other chapters. We also provide solutions to the few technical hitches that can occur when using optional and third-party tasks. For a complete summary of all of Ant s tasks, refer to the Ant Task Reference in the appendix, and to the Ant online documentation.
