Note SQL Server 2005 permits a database to have 32,767 data files and filegroups; however, this limit is almost never expected to be reached. In real world deployments, the number of files and filegroups in a database is usually less than a half dozen, and many of the small and lightly accessed databases have just a single data and transaction log file. The one exception to this is when data partitioning is used. In this case the database could very easily have upwards of 250 filegroups and files.
