This pointer is converted into an index number by subtracting a pointer to the beginning of the vertex array. If the vertex doesn t exist yet, the index will be equal to the size of the vertex array. If so, I append the new vertex at the end, which creates a new element at the index position. If the vertex does exist, the index is already valid and no new vertex is required. Either way, the index now points to the correct vertex element and can be added to the index array.
