Do not create a VPN connection to the corporate network from the ICS computer. If you do, then by default all traffic from the ICS computer, including traffic from intranet clients, is forwarded over the VPN connection to the corporate network. This means that Internet resources are not reachable and that all branch office computers will send data over a logical connection by using the credentials of the ICS computer user, a questionable security practice. The first time you start a new VPN connection, it takes a few moments to connect using PPTP, and then it tries to connect using L2TP and IPSec. Subsequent connections do not take as long because the VPN connection remembers which VPN protocol was successful for the initial connection. After the VPN connection is made, the client on the remote office s intranet has access to the shared resources (such as file servers and printers) on the corporate network. Likewise, while the client is connected to the corporate network using a VPN, the client is logically disconnected from the Internet unless the corporate network provides its own Web access. To access the Web through the corporate network, a client must be configured to use the rules established for Web access from the corporate network. For example, many corporations use a proxy server. In this scenario, you need to configure the browser of the client to use the corporate proxy server to access the Web. You can configure Internet Explorer to use specific proxy settings with specific Internet connections. After doing so, the client can easily shift between accessing the Internet by using the shared connection on the ICS computer or by using a VPN connection through the corporate network.

.NET applications can run on a version of the .NET Framework different from the ver sion under which the application was compiled. This technique is called redirection, and it is implemented via configuration files. If you compile an application with the first version of Visual Studio .NET, and you want to run it only under version 1.0 of the .NET Framework, you don t have to provide a configuration file (unless you need it to specify other settings, of course). Likewise, you don t need a configuration file if you compile an application with Visual Studio .NET 2003 and you want it to run only under version 1.1 of the .NET Framework. In this sec tion I ll examine how you must modify the configuration file in the remaining cases. Versions 1.0 and 1.1 of the .NET Framework use different XML tags to enable redirec tion: version 1.0 uses the <requiredRuntime> tag; version 1.1 ignores the <requiredRuntime> tag but recognizes multiple <supportedRuntime> tags, the order of which dictates which runtime version should be used when more than one version is installed on the end user machine. The simplest case is when you want to run an application compiled under version 1.0 of the .NET Framework on a machine on which version 1.1 of the .NET Framework is installed:

The default algorithm entails that the name of each repeated element be scoped into the naming container. This explains the first token of Repeater1. Note also that controls that are not assigned an explicit ID are given a system-provided progressive ctlXX string. In the previous example, each bound element is wrapped in an implicitly created RepeaterItem control with a ctlXX ID. This explains the progressive ctlXX token. Finally, the common name of the element is appended. Note that what makes two IDs unique is just the presence of implicitly named controls such as the RepeaterItem. In ASP.NET, any data-bound, template-based control follows a similar schema. As mentioned, in ASP.NET 4 the base Control class features the ClientIDMode property. The property is declared to be of type ClientIDMode an enumerated type. Table 6-3 lists the feasible values for the property.

I(k) is also fed to the inverse adaptive quantizer, the adaptation speed control, and the quantizer scale factor adaptation blocks that operate on a 5-bit I(k) having one of 32 possible values. I(k) 00000 is a legitimate input to these blocks when used in the decoder due to transmission errors.
