Because consequences are different things for different people, researchers have been busy studying how to use consequences to encourage motivation to change drug use. For example, some research suggests that motivation may be enhanced if the person believes consequences are directly attributable to substance abuse and that the consequences are in personally important domains (Blume & Marlatt, 2000). However, there does not seem to be any silver-bullet type of consequence that will motivate change in all people. In addition, a person with a drug problem must believe that the adverse consequences outweigh the pleasurable effects in order to be motivated to change (see 3 for greater detail on motivating change). To complicate matters, consequences seem to be perceived differently by young adults than they are among older adults. Because consequences are perceived differently, their ability to motivate change is different among young drug users than it is for older ones. For example, some research suggests that tactics that use fear to motivate change among young adults are not very effective, simply because young adults do not believe those types of consequences can happen to them. In addition, young drug users often do not experience immediate health consequences and sometimes are spared other types of nasty consequences by the safety nets of families and other social institutions. So, even though negative consequences often are associated with drug problems, they often are not experienced the same way from person to person. Discussing consequences can help encourage behavior change if the therapist knows which ones to highlight. This kind of clinical judgment usually comes from the therapist s seeing a drug problem through the eyes of the client with whom he or she is working (see 3 for ideas on how to do this).

There is nothing new about mobile radio As we have seen, radio at its beginning was a wireless message service By 1922, there were experiments with re and police mobile radio By the mid 1930s, mobile radio broadcast receivers were appearing in cars15 Mobile telephony for the general public slowly grew, and became less expensive and clumsy to use Eventually a service emerged that would be recognizable today, except that the handheld telephone was considerably larger These services used analog frequency modulation, worked at either 400 or 800 MHz, and were cellular, meaning that many transmitters covered small patches of land and the user was handed off from one to the other as he moved around In the United States, the system was called AMPS (Advanced Mobile Phone System), and it was one of the last contributions of the old Bell System.

Various similar systems, the so-called First Generation systems, appeared in the rest of the world at the same time In Scandinavia it was the NMT (Nordic Mobile Telephone) system, which entered operation in 1981 as the world s rst cellular system Although these systems were analog, they played an important role in acquainting the public with the virtues of a simple mobile telephone system The area in the world with the fastest growth was Scandinavia The explosion of public interest in mobile telephony came with the digital Second Generation The cutting edge was in Europe and the system was the GSM one16 that we still use today First tests were carried out in 1986 and GSM began to be installed in the mid-1990s Public use of mobile telephony grew dramatically with GSM for several reasons.

Adjectives come in three main flavours: describing, identifying and quantifying. The following sections take you through the uses of each variety.

And that s that: with the completion of step 4 of our procedure, you d continue with the remaining steps, 5 to 9, taking comfort that the categories devised in steps 5 to 9 were thoroughly reliable. All of this seems very pedantic, and for day-to-day purposes, most people would skip the reanalysis of step 4.5. However, if you were doing all this as part of a formal research programme, especially one leading to a dissertation of any kind, you d have to include this step, and report the improvement in reliability (it is conventional to report both the before and the after gure, by the way!).

In part, digital telephony was inherently more ef cient and it adapted easily to other services such as email High-frequency radio and digital circuitry were dropping rapidly in price and size in any case And GSM offered for the rst time a more subtle advantage: roaming Because it was uni ed over many countries and now over much of the world and because its software procedures made identi cation of visiting telephones easy, people could roam over much of the Earth and use the same telephone All these factors combined to make a very attractive product, and public use of mobile telephones doubled in the rst years of the Second Generation In some countries now there are more mobile users than xed users In a sense that has not previously existed, public telecommunication has achieved mobility.
