Main Features IP provides routing and addressing for virtually all computer networks in the world. Windows clients by default are configured to obtain an IP address automatically. In this default configuration, the clients obtain an IPv4 address from a DHCP server if one is available. If one is not available, they assign themselves an address that offers only limited connectivity. Critical infrastructure servers, however, should be assigned addresses manually. To troubleshoot connectivity problems on IP networks, you should use tools such as Ipconfig, Ping, Tracert, PathPing, and Arp. If you need to implement IPv4 on a network or troubleshoot connectivity in a large network, you need to understand how IPv4 addressing works. An IPv4 address is a 32-bit number that can be broken down into a network ID and host ID, and the subnet mask is used to determine which is which. Some IP address ranges are reserved for use in private networks: 10.0.0.0 10.255.255.255, 172.16.0.0 172.31.255.254, and 192.168.0.0 192.168.255.254. Groups of addresses are known as address blocks, which you can obtain from your provider. To understand address blocks, you need to understand how many addresses are associated with each subnet mask. Two addresses in every subnet are reserved for special uses, so you always need at least two more addresses than computers for each subnet. Public IPv4 addresses are becoming exhausted, and the only long-term solution is a replacement protocol called IPv6, which is just beginning to be implemented. IPv6 addresses are 128-bit addresses. Global IPv6 addresses are usable on public networks. Unique local addresses are routable but are usable only on private networks, and linklocal addresses are autoconfigured addresses that provide only limited connectivity. As you can imagine, filtering at the data source is much more efficient, so report filters should be used with caution One possible scenario where filtering can be useful is when you need to enforce security Let s say that the Sales by Territory report takes a parameter that allows privileged users to request the report for a given territory However, you want to prevent regional managers who will run the report from requesting a territory they don t supervise To implement this, create a lookup dataset for parameter available values Then, set a filter based on an expression, which restricts the parameter choices based on the user s Windows identity We implement such an example in chapter 8 Another scenario where filters can be useful is when you need to work with data sources that don t support filtering.
