For example, a clear need exists to transport information regarding gatekeepers and H.245 addresses to be used for logical channels. These types of items are foreign to the usual ISDN environment of Q.931 signaling, which means that information must be added to the Q.931 messages. This task is performed through a rather clever use of the User-to-User information element. This information element in Q.931 ISDN messages is used to pass information transparently from one user to another using the D channel. The network does not interpret the information. In H.225.0, the User-to-User information element is used to convey all the extra information needed in an H.323 environment. Such information includes parameters such as a mandatory protocol identifier, endpoint aliases, H.245 addresses, and so on. The ASN.1 syntax specified in H.225.0 provides the exact syntax to be used in the User-to-User information element of the various messages. The following sections of this chapter provide a brief overview of some of the most important call-signaling messages.
