The Cairngorm framework is an event pattern framework that allows for a consistent method of calling and handling faults and the return of data from the server. The method utilized for calling the server from Flex can be RemoteObject, WebService, or HTTPService calls (as discussed in 6). In most of the applications I have built, I have created RemoteObjects to work with Cairngorm service locators. RemoteObjects send binary data to the server, and that data is processed by the AMF gateway and serialized into value objects that Spring services use. Once Cairngorm objects have been created to make a call, a view that needs data from the server just needs to code a few of steps to retrieve that data. The view creates an event specific to the type of call it wants to make. When it creates the event, it passes any parameters/variables required to the new event object. Finally, the view uses a Cairngorm object to dispatch the event, as in the following example of getting a list of contacts from the Spring service: var event : GetContactsEvent = new GetContactsEvent(); CairngormEventDispatcher.getInstance().dispatchEvent( event ); The key to ensuring that the call to the server works properly is creating and setting up the call within the Cairngorm framework. There are seven basics steps to do so: 1. Ensure the (Java) service is defined in WEB-INF\flex\remoting-config.xml. 2. Ensure the service is defined in Services.mxml.

At first glance, this might seem like a fairly useless feature, given that a class that cannot be created does not appear all that helpful. However, if you create a class that contains nothing but static members and/or constant data, the class has no need to be allocated in the first place. Consider the following new static class type: // Static classes can only // contain static members! static class TimeUtilClass { public static void PrintTime() { Console.WriteLine(DateTime.Now.ToShortTimeString()); } public static void PrintDate() { Console.WriteLine(DateTime.Today.ToShortDateString()); } } Given that this class has been defined with the static keyword, you cannot create an instance of TimeUtilClass using the new keyword. Rather, all functionality is exposed from the class level: static void Main(string[] args) { Console.WriteLine("***** Fun with Static Data *****\n"); // This is just fine. TimeUtilClass.PrintDate(); TimeUtilClass.PrintTime();

// Compiler error! Can't create static classes! TimeUtilClass u = new TimeUtilClass (); ... } Before the introduction of static class declaration (introduced in .NET 2.0), the only way to prevent the creation of a class that only exposed static functionality was to either redefine the default constructor using the private keyword or mark the class as an abstract type using the C# abstract keyword (full details regarding abstract types are in 6). Consider the following approaches: class TimeUtilClass2 { // Redefine the default ctor as private // to prevent creation. private TimeUtilClass2 (){} public static void PrintTime() { Console.WriteLine(DateTime.Now.ToShortTimeString()); } public static void PrintDate() { Console.WriteLine(DateTime.Today.ToShortDateString()); } } // Define type as abstract to prevent // creation. abstract class TimeUtilClass3 { public static void PrintTime() { Console.WriteLine(DateTime.Now.ToShortTimeString()); } public static void PrintDate() { Console.WriteLine(DateTime.Today.ToShortDateString()); } } While these constructs are still permissible, the use of static classes is a cleaner solution and more type-safe, given that the previous two techniques allowed nonstatic members to appear within the class definition without error. This would be a big problem! If you had a class that was no longer creatable, you would have a chunk of functionality (e.g., all the non-static items) which could not be used! At this point in the chapter you hopefully feel comfortable defining simple class types containing constructors, fields, and various static (and nonstatic) members. Now that you have the basics under your belt, you can formally investigate the three pillars of object-oriented programming.

The Products table has two individual relationships, as described in Table 8-15. Table 8-15. Products Relationships

All object-based languages (C#, Java, C++, Smalltalk, Visual Basic, etc.) must contend with three core principals, often called the pillars of object-oriented programming (OOP):

Encapsulation: How does this language hide an object s internal implementation details and preserve data integrity Inheritance: How does this language promote code reuse Polymorphism: How does this language let you treat related objects in a similar way
