In order to mobilize the audience into becoming involved as either a donor, a volunteer or member, a nonprofit must first understand that the audience they are trying to reach and engage receives many hundred messages a day asking them in one way or another to buy into a relationship This is because building relationships that deliver value is the very lifeblood that pumps through the heart of the branding exercise Virtually all keepers of brands have recognized the power that the Internet holds in building relationships with their different audiences It is a noisy landscape to be sure, but nonprofit organizations have a story to tell that sets them apart from consumer-product driven brands (ie Ivory Snow, Levis, and Ford) Consumer-driven brands must create a story that has some value to you for the sole purpose of building a relationship that is predicated on you purchasing their product.

1. The chemical pathways involved in photooxidative or other photodegradation of polymers in air and in the marine aqueous environment are essentially similar. 2. Unlike plastics exposed on land, those exposed oating on the sea s surface do not suffer from heat buildup due to absorption of infrared radiation in sunlight, as the ocean acts as an ef cient heat sink. As a result bulk temperatures of these materials remain much lower than those concurrently expected with on land exposure at the same location. (With on-land exposures, for instance, it is possible for dark-colored plastics to have a surface temperature that is higher by as much as 30 C compared to the ambient air.) This will signi cantly slow rates of degradation at sea. 3. Foulant coverage on the surface of oating plastics shield the material from exposure to sunlight yielding a slower rate of degradation relative to exposure on land. Also, the sample may not be evenly degraded because of the nonuniformity of surface fouling. The net effect of these factors is illustrated in Figure 10.1, which compares the loss in extensibility of polyethylene samples exposed oating in seawater to that exposed in air at the same location in Biscayne Bay, Florida. Exposure over an approximately 2-month period was negligible for samples exposed oating on water, while those exposed in air nearly embrittled over the same period. Observations were not continued until embrittlement was obtained for the sample

Nonprofits, by contrast, have embedded in their very culture, articulated with their mission statements, and delivered through their programs, brands that are saturated with values that can serve to build relationships that are instead based on you as a member of.
