To illustrate the numerical performance of the subspace algorithm, we consider the case of a channel model given by Equation (2.1), assuming L 70 propagation paths with Md 8 dominant paths (containing 85% of the total power), as illustrated in Figure 2.2(a). We assumed that a symbol is made up of a sequence of 127 coded impulses, periodically transmitted over multiple cycles, and that pulse-amplitude modulation with a pseudo-random sequence of length 127 is used at the transmitter. Since we are considering discrete time signals, time is expressed in terms of samples, where one sample corresponds to the period of Nyquist-rate sampling. In Figure 2.2(b), we show the RMSE of delay estimation for the dominant components vs SNR. We used the approach presented in Section 2.2.5, where the parameter d is chosen to be d 30. The method yields highly accurate estimates for a wide range of SNRs. For example, when the sampling rate Ns is one-quarter of the Nyquist rate Nn, and SNR 5dB, the delay of the dominant components can be estimated with an RMSE of approximately 1 sample. The effects of quantization on the estimation performance are shown in Figure 2.2(c). In particular, we considered 4 7 bit architectures and for each case we plotted the RMSE vs received SNR. The results are also compared to the ideal case when nb 32 bits are used for quantization. Clearly, as the number of bits increases, the overall performance improves. Generally, the 5-bit architecture already yields a very good performance. Also note that when nb ! 5 and the value of SNR is low (e.g., SNR , 0 dB), quantization has almost no impact on the estimation

In previous versions of Internet Explorer, the Favorites folder provided a place in the sys tem where you could save links, or shortcuts, to your favorite Web sites. Favorites were typically accessed in Internet Explorer via the Favorites menu. Now, in IE 8, Microsoft provides two places where you can manage Favorites: the Favorites Center, which debuted in IE 7, and the new Favorites Bar.

Veritas Cluster Server manages service groups composed of hardware resources such as disk drives and/or network interface cards, and software resources such as the Web server process (httpd) and/or file server process (nfsd) Administrators have the responsibility of defining service groups that are to be monitored and controlled by VCS so that the services within those service groups will have maximum availability As an example, consider a system that provides a database service In order to provide such a service, the system needs a network interface card (NIC), an IP address, a physical disk, a file system on the disk to contain data files, and database server software running If this database service needs to fail over from one system to another, all the resources needed to provide this service must migrate from the failed system to the system where the database service is being recreated.

To accomplish this task, a system administrator would create a VCS service group that would include all the hardware resources (the NIC and the physical disk) and the software resources (IP address, file system and database server) necessary to provide the database service There are two categories of VCS service groups: parallel service groups and failover service groups Parallel service groups These are used for applications that can run on more than one system in the cluster For instance, if a service group is composed of a network interface card (NIC) and an IP address, this service group will run on all systems in the cluster since every node must have the NIC configured with the IP address in order communicate with other hosts on the network Failover service groups.

Though it is relatively uncommon to see the use of uninitialized variables, these vulnerabilities do surface once in a while and can lead to real exploitable conditions in applications. Static memory such as that in the .data or .bss section of an executable is initialized to null on program startup. You have no such guarantee for stack or heap variables, and they must be explicitly initialized before they are read from to ensure consistent program execution. If a variable is uninitialized, its contents are, by definition, undefined. However, it is possible to predict exactly what data an uninitialized memory region will contain. For example, a local stack variable that it uninitialized will contain data from previous function calls. It may contain argument data, saved registers, or local variables from previous function calls, depending on its location on the stack. If an attacker is lucky enough to control the right portion of memory, they can often exploit these types of vulnerabilities. Uninitialized variable vulnerabilities are rare because they can lead to immediate program crashes. They are most often found in code that is not commonly exercised, such as code blocks rarely triggered because of uncommon error conditions. Many compilers will attempt to detect the use of uninitialized variables. Microsoft Visual C++ has some logic for detecting this type of condition, and gcc makes a good attempt at locating these issues also, but neither does a perfect job; therefore, the onus is on the developer not to make these sorts of errors. The following hypothetical example shows an overly simplified case of the use of an uninitialized variable:
