This also means that they are often created for a speci c purpose, and this approach differs from the more generic methods in this book as hybrids tend to be highly tuned to the problem they were designed to solve and means that they can often outperform the single algorithms from which they are derived. Hybrid algorithms are known under a variety of names: memetic algorithms, for instance, relate to evolutionary-based hybrid algorithms in combination with local search techniques such as hill-climbing. There are no hard and fast rules dictating which algorithms can be combined to give a hybrid, but as will be seen later, evolutionary methods are often favoured because they can be hybridized in a number of ways. 1 The mutation or crossover operations can be implemented differently with other algorithms.
