The Russell et al. (1987) controlled trial, described earlier, included 31 adult patients with anorexia nervosa (19 years of age or older) who were randomly assigned to either family therapy or the individual control treatment, following discharge from hospital. There were no differences in outcome between treatments for the group as a whole. However, in the subgroup of patients with an adult onset of the illness (n = 14) the results favoured individual therapy in which there was signi cantly greater weight gain (20%) than family therapy (6%). At ve-year follow-up, there were no differences in eating disorder symptoms in this subgroup although there was some evidence that the patients in individual therapy had made a somewhat better psychological adjustment, particularly in the area of psychosexual attitudes and behaviours (Eisler et al., 1997). Dare et al. (2001) conducted an outpatient study to assess the effectiveness of speci c psychotherapies, including family therapy, in the outpatient management of adult patients with chronic anorexia nervosa. Eighty-four patients were randomized to four treatments: (1) focal psychoanalytic psychotherapy, (2) cognitive analytic therapy, (3) family therapy and (4) routine treatment that served as a control. At the end of one-year follow-up, the group of patients as a whole showed modest symptomatic improvements with the specialist treatments proving to be signi cantly more effective than routine treatment. Of the patients allocated to family therapy or focal psychotherapy, 35% were categorized as recovered or signi cantly improved at the end of treatment compared to 5% of those in the control treatment.
