process will detect an empty structure and complain (see Boundary Condition Checks in 13, Application Design ). Most applications, however, will dump core when they attempt to use the zero-filled values in that file information structure. Similarly, an attempt to read a page from a file that fails returns a zero-filled page; a failed write operation leaves a hole in the file on the server. Both of these failed operations cause data corruption. Writes that fail on soft mounts are particularly tricky to identify because the error may be returned to the calling process long after the error occurs (again, see the following text for more details on why this happens). Big rule with NFS servers: If you make them highly available, make the clients highly patient and persistent in sending requests until they are serviced. Soft mounts are a poor man s way of regaining client control; they were introduced in the early days of NFS when server uptime was measured in days, not months. With improvements in operating system reliability, network engineering and hardware improvements such as switches, and the introduction of server-side redundancy, soft mounts no longer really have a place in NFS environments. You ll get better predictability from server-side controls, and you ll only get control over data integrity with hard mounts.

Another common approach to improving NFS client resistance to failures is to use the automounter (or the publicly available amd) to load-balance across multiple, replicated servers. We discuss the merits of replicating fileservers in 14, Data and Web Services (it s done primarily to improve performance and improve reliability when many geographically dispersed clients are involved). The automounter on the client side is not an availability technique for the long haul. Replicated filesystems give you load balancing and some measure of protection against servers that have gone down for long periods of time, but they don t give you the rapid recovery of an HA pair. When the automounter is given a list of fileservers for the same mount point, it tries to find the one closest to the client by matching network numbers. Once network distance is determined, the automounter then pings each server by calling its null procedure (as described in Detecting RPC Failures in 14) and measuring the response time; the fastest local network server is chosen. Mounts are only completed on the first reference to a filesystem; once the server s volume has been mounted on the client, the automounter is no longer involved in references to that filesystem. If a server is down while the automounter is searching for a potential server, you ll safely skirt it. But if that fileserver later crashes after a client has mounted it, the client is blocked waiting on the server. Replicated filesystems don t help at this point because the client has file handles, mount information, and other state tying it to the particular server that serviced the mount on the first reference through the automounter.

Packets are the basic unit of the Internet. Yet, most user operations involve more than one packet and user experience depends on the performance of the network on a set of packets. Thus it is not surprising that in today's Internet protocol (IP) networks sets of packets are starting to be used as the basis for network operations. The goals of the network operators include improving traf c engineering by better load balancing and moving beyond best effort services. Operating on sets of packets is more ef cient for network elements. In fact, per packet decisions may lead to undesired or even unstable solutions. At the edge of the Internet the transmission control protocol (TCP) offers the abstraction of a TCP connection, each consisting of a set of packets. Within the center of the network, or for non-TCP traf c, a related connection abstraction is provided by an IP ow, a group of related IP packets that are close in time. Examples of network resource allocation problems that arise on a per connection level include signaling to reserve buffers and bandwidth. Signaling could be initiated by the end system to achieve explicit quality of service (QoS), using protocols such as RSVP. Alternatively, signaling could be initiated by a network element to achieve better load balancing or to provide QoS for certain types of traf c. In this approach, edge routers detect ows of related packets and implicitly establish dedicated connections through the network to carry this traf c. Finally, individual network
