In this chapter, you were introduced to the AF Client Manager project. We explored the features and functions of the application that we will build in the remainder of this book. We planned the features of the application and what they do. We employed a step-by-step process to design the application from the user interface down to the database schema. We began with a discussion of the roles Java developers will fulfill working on a RIA project, and how transition to Flex development is smoothed due to the similarities between Java and Flex syntax and development environments. We then discussed defining business requirements. The project plan was laid out as a task list that defines every feature of the application. Within the project planning stages, the wireframes and database schema were built. The Spring service layer architecture was defined to support the design. At this point, you should have a good understanding of the scope of the AF Client Manager project that we will build and a general understanding of what it takes to plan an RIA project.

Because your workflow will be communicating with the AutoLot database, the next step is to reference your AutoLot.dll assembly using the Add Reference dialog box of Visual Studio 2010. This example will make use of the disconnected layer, so I d suggest you reference the final version of this assembly created in 22 (if you set a reference to the final version created in 23, you ll also need to set a reference to System.Data.Entity.dll, as this is required by the ADO.NET Entity Framework). This workflow will also be making use of LINQ to DataSet to query the returned DataTable in order to discover if you have the requested item in stock. Therefore, you should also set a reference to System.Data.DataSetExtensions.dll. Once you have referenced these assemblies, click on the Imports button located at the bottom of the workflow designer. Here you will see a listing of all of the .NET namespaces that you can make use of in your workflow designer (think of this area as a declarative version of the C# using keyword). You can add namespaces from any referenced assembly by typing in the text box mounted on the top of the Imports editor. For convenience, import AutoLotDisconnectedLayer and System.Data.DataSetExtensions. By doing so, you can reference the contained types without needing to use fully qualified names. Figure 26-19 shows some new listings of the Imports area once you are finished.

Next, define two new workflow wide input arguments, named RequestedMake and RequestedColor, both of which will be of type String. Like the previous example, the host of the workflow will create a Dictionary object that contains data that maps to these arguments, so there is no need to assign a default value to these items using the Arguments editor. As you might guess, the workflow will use these values to perform the database query. As well, you can use this same Arguments editor to define an output argument named FormattedResponse of type String. When you need to return data from the workflow back to the host, you

can create any number of output arguments which can be enumerated by the host when the workflow has completed. Figure 26-20 shows the current workflow designer.

Figure 26-20. Recall that workflow arguments provide a way send data to and return data from the workflow

fter all the planning in 2, we are now ready for the actual project startup and configuration. We are not quite to the point where we will start coding the project. This chapter will tell you what you need to get your development environment ready for the produce phase of the project. I am going to explain the procedures I go through before I write any code. We will go over the tools that integrate into the Eclipse IDE to support the development of Flex projects. You will also learn about building Flex projects via command-line scripts using Ant. Finally, we will set up three projects in our Eclipse IDE. The first project will be our Flex project. It will demonstrate how to define the Flex project s folder structure using an MVC pattern. The second project will be a Flex Library project, which will contain any custom classes that we build for the application. The Flex library will eventually be compiled and integrated into the main Flex project. Finally, we will create our Spring project. We will also define the architecture and folder structure for that project, so that you get a good understanding of where the Spring beans reside.
