administrator s password hash and use it to authenticate to a DC as a domain admin. This really should be obvious to any observer, however, and, quite frankly, is putting far too much effort into the attack. If an attacker has already compromised a workstation, it would be far easier to simply install a sub-authentication package, which gets the password in clear-text during the log-on process. These packages are supported to enable pass-through, single sign-on to non-Windows network devices, just like the NT hash is cached to support single sign-on to Windows devices. Although it would be possible to remove the cached password hashes, most users would rebel at having to type their passwords every time they accessed a network resource. If these cached password hashes were removed, the computer would no longer be able to authenticate transparently to non-domain network resources on behalf of the user. The problem, therefore, is not really with how Windows caches the NT hash, nor with sub-authentication packages, but rather with operational practices. A domain administrator should never log on interactively to a workstation used by a user with local administrative privileges unless that user is as trusted as all the domain administrators. By following this simple principle, you can keep this legitimate functionality from becoming an attack vector. For more information on managing this, see 13, Managing Security Dependencies to Secure Your Network.

For day-to-day management of POSIX permissions, the three modes we previously discussed (read, write, execute) will be your primary weapons against those pesky permissions issues. In the following example, you ll use more or less the same class you did in the previous examples; it will provide your client with a SetValue() and GetValue() method to store and retrieve an int value as the object s state. The metadata that is needed for the client to create a reference to the CAO will be extracted with SoapSuds.exe, about which you ll read more later in this chapter. The reliance on SoapSuds allows you to develop the server application without any need for up-front design of a shared assembly, therefore the server will simply include the CAOs implementation. You can see this in Listing 3-4.

requests, mark the status of completed requests, and query for information about its own capabilities and access. A handler app can retrieve pending requests in one of two ways. By calling ContentHandlerServer.getRequest(), the handler app can directly receive an Invocation. This is useful if you know that a request is waiting, or if you prefer to process incoming requests serially within a separate thread. The method takes a boolean: if true, the method will block until an Invocation is received; if false, the method can return null if no Invocation is immediately available. The following example shows a handler application first checking to see if an Invocation is present. If not, it will spawn a thread that will continually loop and process all future incoming Invocation objects.

One of the major problems with NTD was that the application was downloaded from the Web and as a result was placed in a very tight security sandbox. It was so tight that the deployment approach was virtually useless for real-world business applications. When Microsoft set out to build ClickOnce, one of the major concerns was a practical solution to addressing security within an application. By default, applications deployed with ClickOnce are configured with Full Trust permissions. You can verify this by looking at the Project Properties Security tab, as shown in Figure 7-8. Note that the Enable ClickOnce Security Settings box is checked, along with the This Is a Full Trust Application radio button. Note that if these buttons are not checked, you have not yet published the application; in other words, publishing the application applies these default settings.

NOTE With Pluto, we needed to use a workaround for Lucene 1.4-rc3 s lock directory. Lucene uses locks because only one thread can be updating the index at a time. In previous versions of Lucene, the program would check the java.io.tmpdir Java system property and use the temporary directory for the locks. Lucene 1.4 will use the java.io.tmpdir as a default, but uses the value of the org.apache.lucene.lockdir system property if it exists.
