where MSS is the segment size, RE is the path s rate estimate and baseRTT is the round-trip propagation delay estimate. The RE variable estimates the rate of data being delivered to the receiver by observing ACK packets. Recall that if the window is below ssthresh, slow start rapidly increases the window to above the ssthresh. This has the effect of ensuring that, after a loss, the window is rapidly restored to the capacity of the path. In this way, Westwood achieves better performance in high-BDP and lossy environments. TCPW also avoids unnecessary window reductions if the loss seems to be caused by transmission error. To discriminate packet loss caused by congestion from loss caused by transmission error, TCPW monitors the RTT to detect possible buffer overflow. If RTT exceeds the Bspike start threshold, the spike state is entered and all losses are treated as congestion losses. If the RTT drops below the Bspike end threshold, then the spike state is exited and losses might be caused by channel error. The RTT thresholds are computed by Bspike start = baseRTT + max RTT baseRTT

A close co-operation with the ANSI 136 TDMA community was essential to narrow the differences between the GSM community and the second largest community in terms of user numbers. In order to realise synergies they chose EDGE and the GPRS evolution as their solution for the third generation. This was enabled/supported by an intensive co-operation between SMG and UWCC. A framework agreement was concluded between ETSI and UWCC. SMG took the UWCC requirements into consideration in the development of EDGE and GPRS. This included a version EDGE Compact, which could be implemented with very little spectrum and a 800 MHz EDGE version. UWCC delegates took part regularly in SMG meetings.

In this chapter, we will study another type of primitive, dynamic object requests. Dynamic object requests do not assume the existence of a client stub. They explicitly treat requests as objects and use dynamic invocation interfaces provided by middleware to define object requests on-the-fly , that is while the client object executes. Thus dynamic invocation interfaces provide designers with the ability to defer the definition of an object request from compile-time to run-time of the client object. One of the benefits of the static invocation with client stubs is that the compiler with which the client is compiled can establish type safety; it can check whether the requested operation is actuallyexported bythe server object and whether the actual parameters passed match the formal parameters that the server expects. When requests are defined at run-time, the client compiler cannot perform such checks. In order to make type-safe dynamic invocations, client programmers have to formulate run-time enquiries using a reflection interface that makes the type definitions of the server object available at run-time. We start with examples that demonstrate the need for genericity. We then outline the principles of dynamic invocation and review how it is achieved in C O RBA and C O M. We then present principles for handling reflection and again review how this information is made available in current middleware. We finally discuss how these two primitives are exploited for the construction of generic applications.

The GSM standard was not yet completed and the version then available, abis21 could not be used to build a commercial system, but the license requirements were set in stone and had to be met. Along with our new colleagues, we prepared a request for proposal and began general planning for the network. In February 1990, the RFP was released. The proposals were due to

hypochloraemia, polyuria, and dehydration, is a typical result of severe purging behaviour. The Pseudo-Bartter Syndrome should be differentially diagnosed from the syndrome of inadequate ADH secretion (Schwartz Bartter Syndrome) (Challier & Cabrol, 1995). Metabolic Acidosis Metabolic acidosis affects about 8% of BN patients and is a result of enteral bicarbonate loss in cases of laxative abuse (Mitchell et al., 1987). Possible additional causes are a markedly increased endogenous acid formation in AN as well as reduced acid excretion in connection with renal insuf ciency. Water Balance Dehydration occurs as a result of reduced uid supply or of chronic purging behaviour and is often associated with circulatory disorders and electrolyte imbalances (hypokalaemia, hypotonic dehydration, see above), which have to be considered in rehydration. Some patients are water loading, sometimes due to weight manipulation or due to additional psychiatric disorders. As a consequence, these patients show a pseudo-anaemia, and a hyponatriemia.
