document that you did not check out before connecting the library with Outlook, you can double-click it within Outlook to open the document if you are still connected to your network. When you do this, a dialog box asks whether you want to open the document or save it to your computer. If you choose to open the document, Word opens the document (assuming it is a DOC or DOCX file) in Read-Only mode. However, you can edit the document by clicking the Edit Offline button immediately beneath the Ribbon. When you click this button, Word retrieves a copy of the document, placing it in your local SharePoint drafts folder. You can now disconnect and edit the document. If you choose to save the document to your computer when you double-click it from Outlook, a copy of the file is downloaded to the directory of your choice. However, this action breaks the link between SharePoint and Outlook. Thus, when you edit this copy of the file, Word does not transfer the changes back to SharePoint.
