Next, if you use an Excel workbook to supply your indicator values, you must supply the URL of the workbook published on your SharePoint site using Excel Services. Then you must enter the address of the cell to use for the value or reference the cell by a cell name. If you click the icon to the right of the value, the pop-up window displays the workbook and lets you select the cell to use not just for the Indicator Value, but also for the Indicator Goal and the Indicator Warning values. In fact, you can click the workbook icon next to any of these three values on the main property page for the KPI item to return to the workbook to verify or select new cells to use for these values. This does not mean that you must use cell values for the Indicator Goal or Indicator Warning. You can enter manual numbers for these values. Figure 8-39 shows just this portion of the KPI item properties, as the other properties have already been reviewed in discussing the previous KPI types.

However, you are interested in how documents interact with SharePoint, not Windows Explorer. The interesting point is that you can surface a Word document s metadata within a SharePoint document library as columns in that library. Word passes the metadata values to SharePoint when you save a document or upload a new document to a properly defined document library.

Finally, when defining a KPI using SQL Server 2005 Analysis Services, you must begin by defining the data connection to the data cube. You must store this data connection in a data connection library within your site. Remember that the Report Center supports a data connection library for this purpose. You must then select the Analysis Services KPI to use. If the KPI has other KPIs that contribute to its value, you can choose to include them in the current KPI list. Caution If you add the columns as described below to your document library after you upload your Word documents, SharePoint cannot populate values into the columns unless you re-upload the document or edit the document and reassign values to the metadata columns.
